Job Description
Position Summary:
The Diagnostic Medical Sonographer utilizes high frequency sound waves and other diagnostic techniques for medical diagnosis in various regions of the body.
Education, License & Cert:
High school with additional skills training (certification) required. Certification Required: RDMS (preferred) or ARRT with specialized certification in Sonography required, cannot be certification eligible.
Experience:
Minimum of three months (RDMS).
Essential Functions:
1. Performs the scanning examination requested by the referring physician, modifying the examination, depending upon on the findings demonstrated, and review the examination with the supervising Radiologist if necessary.
2. Assists the Radiologist or the clinician in special procedures such as percutaneous fluid aspiration or biopsy procedures when performed in the department or in Interventional Radiology.
3. Performs routine equipment checks for resolution and other quality control procedures, as necessary.
4. Must be able to react quickly to emergency situations such as patient fainting, patient being unsteady while getting on to scanning table, if unsafe situation occurs (such as a fire), getting patient to safety and sounding alarm.
5. Ability to work alone on shift or on call and perform the job done with confidence in your abilities and in an efficient manner.
6. Must be able to lift, push, reach, bend, stop and walk in order to care for patients. Must be able to perform a stand‐pivot transfer with a patient.
7. Must be able to maintain composure during procedures or exams with potential colostomy or draining wounds, as well as working with patients with various conditions such as Hepatitis, Meningitis or those with isolation precautions.
Other Duties:
1. Verifies images and reports of exam and sends to PACS.
2. Maintains an inventory of coupling agent, drugs and other supplies and requisitions and materials, as needed.
3. Obtains sterile instruments, as needed, and returns them to central supply for sterilization and storage.
4. Teaches ultrasound technique to student technologists and completes appropriate paperwork.
5. Demonstrates willingness to accept non‐routine work assignments, as appropriate.
6. Must be able to work a variety of shifts and be in the call rotation on a scheduled basis, along with on evenings/overnights and weekends. Hospital observed holidays are not required to be covered by Per Diem Ultrasound Technologists, however they may volunteer to cover if desired.
7. Able to be on call and in the department within 45 minutes after being called for a procedure.
8. Must be able to sit or stand for a prolonged period of time in performing the ordered examination (usually 30‐60 minutes for each patient).
9. Performs high level disinfection process according to policy/procedures.
