Job Description

School Counselor

Qualifications:

  • Hold a PA state certification for school counseling.
  • Master’s degree required.
  • Has completed all appropriate background checks as required by law, including, but not limited to criminal history report, PA child abuse clearance, and FBI background check.
  • Preferred Montessori credentials.

Reports to: CEO/Principal

Evaluation:

This position is evaluated at least annually by the CEO/principal. Evaluation is to be based upon fulfillment of duties and responsibilities listed in the job description and Danielson Framework for School Counseling.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to work effectively with teachers, parents, and students
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret, write reports.
  • Ability to define problems, collect and analyze data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to the instructional program.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, staff, and parents through oral and written communication.
  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of all GMCS, state, and federal requirements.
  • Ability to plan and implement lessons based on GMCS and school objectives and student needs and abilities.
  • Ability to meet timelines.

Responsibilities: The essential job functions include, but are not limited to, the following fundamental duties:

  • Collaborate with teachers and parents to create supportive learning environments for all students.
  • Work with the Assistant Principal to manage student behaviors, and documentation, and communicate with families regarding behaviors.
  • Participate in meetings and in-service training.
  • Observe children of concern.
  • Member of Child Study Team and Student Assistant Program (SAP).
  • Complete the yearly SAP report to the State.
  • Member of the Threat Assessment Team.
  • Meet and conference with parents and teachers regarding psychological health issues interfering with academic progress.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by school administration per school policies and practices.
  • Create, implement, and maintain Student Attendance Improvement Plans.
  • Maintain compliance with Chapter 339.
  • Maintain student files.
  • Teach social-emotional skills to students in biweekly lessons.
  • Provide support groups to students.
  • Case manager for the social worker.
  • Coordinate and oversee Junior Achievement, Biztown, and Career Day.
  • Provide individual and group counseling to students to support their emotional and social development.
  • Develop and implement programs that promote academic achievement and personal growth.
  • Assist in conflict resolution and behavior management strategies within the school community.
  • Support students with special educational needs by coordinating resources and services.
  • Conduct assessments to identify student needs and develop appropriate interventions.
