Position Overview: The PRN Infusion Nurse will work at our Liverpool NY center. The Infusion Nurse will provide direct patient care in compliance with professional practice and clinic standards. The Infusion Nurse will promote a collaborative, interdisciplinary approach towards patients, families, and all members of the care delivery team. The Infusion Nurse may also participate in quality management activities to positively affect patient and system outcomes to improve care.

POSITION REPORTS TO: Infusion Nurse Practitioner

Responsibilities:

Clinical

  • Identify, assess, and diagnose problems through patient assessment and interactions; evaluate actual or potential patient health problems.
  • Ensure that Informed Consent forms are understood and signed by patients/caregivers prior to administering treatments.
  • Provide infusion therapy and other skilled nursing care to patients including but not limited to:
  • Conduct patient admissions and assessments
  • Calculate dosages and infusion rates
  • Prepare and/or reconstitute ordered infusion / injectable therapy
  • Start and discontinue peripheral IV catheters
  • Access and maintain implanted Port-a-Cath’s and other central venous catheters under sterile technique
  • Administer proper care of venous / non-venous access
  • Administer prescribed infusion therapy
  • Monitor patient response to interventions and ordered therapy
  • Respond to emergency patient needs and/or adverse reactions
  • Provide psychosocial support of patient and/or family
  • Educate patients and their caregivers about their medications, potential side effects, administration devices, catheter maintenance, administration of prescribed therapy where indicated, and pre- and post- procedure care.
  • Obtain physician ordered laboratory specimens, process and prepare for transport.
  • Communicate any changes in the patient’s condition to supervisor, physicians, and other healthcare practitioners as appropriate. Collaborate and confer with physicians and nurse practitioners regarding patient status and treatment needs.
  • Document all interactions and communication with patients and/or caregivers, plan of treatment, assessments, treatments, patient responses / reactions to treatment, status of disease process, and training activities.
  • Identify and assign correct billing codes for therapies and procedures administered / provided to patients.
  • Maintain accurate inventory logs of medications and products.

Continuing Education

  • Maintain professional licensure, certification, and health requirements as well as demonstrate clinical competence.
  • Keep current on advances in nursing care by participating in educational programs, attending lectures, training sessions, and conferences.
  • Participate in the orientation of other nurses or center personnel as requested.

EXPERIENCE: RN with a minimum of at least 3 years of recent nursing experience in a clinical setting, including at least 1 year of infusion therapy experience required. Excellent infusion therapy skills, including peripheral IV catheter insertion, care and management of central lines including PICC’s and Port-a-Caths, as well as non-venous access devices. Experience working with IVIG and biologics highly desired. Basic computer skills; familiar with current EMR systems.

EDUCATION: Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing and licensed to practice in the state of New York required. BSN preferred. Current CPR/BLS certification required.

Job tasks are performed in close physical proximity to other people. Work is performed in an outpatient infusion suite. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock, exposure to infectious diseases, and transmission of airborne disease. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Must have a vehicle in good working condition.
